February 2015 - Finally Hitting the One Million Dollars Mark!

March 3rd, 2015 at 10:05 pm

Cash & Savings: $87,729 ==> $40,388 (-53.96%)
Foreign Currency: $38,794 ==> $38,794 (0%)
US Brokerage: $277,786 ==> $298,160 (7.73%)
Overseas Brokerage: $242,307 ==> $249,558 (3.42%)
Retirement Accounts: $290,797==> $307,304 (5.68%)
Business Investment: $15,000 ==> $65,000 (333.33%)
Charitable Account: $13,880 ==> $14,279 (2.87%)
Total: $965,293 ==> $1,013,483 (4.99%)

The biggest personal finance achievement in February is that I finally hit the one million dollars mark. Back in my 20s when I started working I set the goal of saving one million dollars when I hit 40, that was during the dot com age. I missed that goal by a few years but so be it.

The biggest personal achievement in February, however, is that I’m now engaged and need to save money for the ring and wedding. I budgeted $50k for this but not sure if it’s enough. $20k of it will come from the emergency fund I had saved and the rest will come from monthly savings and proceeds of selling stocks.

    That's a great amount. I went over $500,000 last year, hope to get to $600,000 by early next year.

    What awesome news on both fronts. Congratulations. I hope you and intended have had that difficult conversation about how you feel about money, what it means to you, and will devise spending system that makes both of you happy.

    I'm feeling sympathetic to the pressure they put on brides these days. Everyone seems so anxious to pressure them to spend, putting their hand in her pocket for an extravagant party.

    Congratulations on both counts!

    This is a goal I've been working toward for a long time. I am pretty close if you count my house value but it will take a little longer to hit the $1 mil mark based on savings/investments alone....i figure 4 or 5 more years.

    Thank you ozgirl and snafu!

    I already started pre-marriage counselling and one of the homework is to talk about how to create a savings plan. That will be the first step before we go deeper into how to manage our current assets. My fiancee has been doing quite well herself and she has a very strong opinion on how to manage her finances, in the past we only touched the surface when it comes to investment and finances because we have very different views. We're both good savers but I'm an active (relatively speaking) investor when she's very conservative and takes a very hands off approach. I think she only checks her portfolio on a yearly basis when I check it on a weekly basis.

    I'll share with everyone how that conversation goes next month. Like snafu said, it will be a difficult one, but it must be done.

    Thank you, PatientSaver! You might reach the goal sooner, you never know. I chickened out a bit during the 2008/2009 financial crisis but I slowly got back to the investment universe and finally reached the $1M goal.

    Thanks, CB!

    Congratulations on hitting the millionaire mark. $50K is a lot for a wedding. Is it going to be a destination wedding or something?

  23. Easy Cloud Says:
    1425595445

    Thank you, Firstofmanysteps! It took me 16 years to reach the $1M target though.I probably would have been able to reach it sooner if not for a certain incident but that story is for another day.

  24. Easy Cloud Says:
    1425596371

    Thanks, LuckyRobin! I budgeted that for everything, including the ring. I don't know if I will actually spend that much as I haven't sit down with the wedding planner yet. Also I have family members flying to Atlanta from overseas so I need to take care of that as well.

    Thanks, Tabs. Shortly I'll be able to report my progress in March. The last four weeks seems like a lot longer than usual given all the wedding related activities I had to gone through.
